The UWI Seismic Research Center (UWI SRC) has released a statement addressing the recent surge in earthquake activity recorded in the Eastern Caribbean. The Lesser Antilles arc, identified as a subduction zone setting, routinely experiences thousands of earthquakes annually. While most of these seismic events go unnoticed, the region remains susceptible to moderate to significant-sized earthquakes.
According to the UWI SRC, the focal point of the recent earthquake activity has been the northeastern section of the arc, an area historically associated with significant seismic events, notably the largest earthquake recorded on February 8, 1843. In the past days and months, several areas spanning from Barbados to the far northeast of the arc have witnessed moderate to strong earthquakes. The occurrence of such activities sometimes serves as a precursor to more substantial magnitude earthquakes in the short term.
Emphasizing that larger earthquakes are a natural part of the seismic cycle, the UWI SRC clarifies that current scientific understanding cannot precisely predict the location and timing of such events. In response to this heightened seismic activity, the UWI SRC urges the public to adopt preparedness measures to mitigate potential impacts.
“It is important to remember that the effects of large magnitude earthquakes can extend over wide areas. We should all, therefore, ensure that we prepare, plan, and practice, individually, nationally, and regionally,” states the UWI SRC.
As the Eastern Caribbean remains vigilant amid increased seismic activity, staying informed and implementing precautionary measures becomes imperative for the safety and resilience of communities.
