Dominican Government Grants Concessions on Christmas Barrels for 2023

Roseau, Dominica – December 11, 2023

The Government of Dominica has announced concessions on Christmas barrels imported into the country during the festive season In a move to spread holiday cheer and ease the financial burden on citizens, from December 7, 2023, to December 27, 2023.

The approved concessions apply exclusively to barrels intended for personal use and explicitly exclude any commercial purposes. Eligible items for the concessions include foodstuff, with limited allowances for clothing, toiletries, and toys.

Barrels valued up to EC$1,500.00 will enjoy a waiver on Import Duty, Environmental Levy, and Customs Service Charge. Each household in Dominica is entitled to a maximum of two (2) barrels under these concessions. Additionally, boxes, drums, crates, and cartons of equivalent size to a regular barrel are also deemed eligible for the concessions.

While these concessions provide significant relief on import-related charges, a flat port charge of Ten Eastern Caribbean Dollars (EC$10.00) will be applicable to cover handling and storage expenses. Moreover, a Value Added Tax (VAT) of 15 percent of the import value will be payable to the Comptroller of Customs.

This initiative aims to facilitate a joyous holiday season for Dominican households, promoting the importation of essential goods for festive celebrations. The concessions are anticipated to alleviate financial pressures on citizens during a time traditionally associated with increased expenses.
