In a groundbreaking move for Caribbean regional travel, the Governments of Guyana, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago have united to establish a new company focused on introducing a passenger and cargo regional ferry system. The announcement was made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali during a contract signing event for the US$35 million Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) on Friday.
President Ali underlined the potential of this collaborative venture to unlock substantial opportunities by efficiently connecting Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados through a robust and reliable ferry system. The newly formed company aims to facilitate the transportation of both passengers and cargo, fostering stronger economic ties and cooperation among the three nations.
In his address to the press, President Ali revealed that ongoing discussions among the three governments emphasize the need to initiate and expand the ferry system, recognizing its capacity to realize its full potential.
The initiative directly addresses persistent challenges in intra-regional transportation within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The renewed focus on regional connectivity gains added significance in the context of current efforts to ensure the region’s food security.
In a proactive move last year, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) committed to financing consultancy services for a study exploring options to establish a new shipping service across Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago. This strategic study aligns with the broader goal of enhancing intra-regional transportation within the Caribbean.
President Ali’s announcement represents a positive stride in resolving transportation challenges that have been a focal point for CARICOM over several years. The collaborative efforts of these nations underscore their commitment to addressing these challenges and promoting economic growth and integration in the region.
