In a bid to enhance public safety and security, St. Vincent and the Grenadines has initiated the National Firearms Amnesty (NFA) 2024, offering residents and citizens the opportunity to surrender illegal firearms without fear of prosecution.
The amnesty program, which commenced on Friday and will extend until May 31, 2024, is a collaborative effort between the government and the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF). Its primary aim is to rid the nation of illegal weapons, thereby curbing criminal activity and promoting a safer environment for all inhabitants.
“The Amnesty seeks to remove illegal/illicit firearms from off the streets, and from the hands of criminals. The objective is to improve safety and security of our citizens and visitors,” stated the RSVGPF.
Under the terms of the amnesty, individuals possessing illegal firearms can surrender them anonymously to designated authorities without facing any questioning or prosecution. The initiative emphasizes a “no questions asked” and “no prosecution” policy, ensuring that individuals turning over firearms during the specified period will not be subjected to legal consequences.
Contrary to a “buy back” initiative, participants will not receive financial compensation for relinquishing illegal firearms. Instead, individuals can hand over their weapons at any police station or to specified community figures, including ministers of religion, head teachers, justices of the peace, parliamentarians, lawyers, or authorized firearms dealers.
The launch of the NFA comes in the wake of heightened concerns over gun-related violence in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Last year alone, law enforcement seized 37 illegal firearms, some of which are believed to have been utilized in the commission of the country’s 55 recorded murders.
By providing a safe avenue for individuals to surrender illegal firearms, the NFA aims to foster a culture of accountability and responsibility while bolstering efforts to combat crime and maintain public safety across the nation.
