In a move aimed at fostering regional cooperation and addressing workforce shortages, the Government of the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) has announced plans to collaborate closely with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and introduce a new visa waiver program.
During the weekly Government House briefing on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, Government House Communications Director Richard Motta revealed that Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has accepted an exciting opportunity for the USVI to work closely with CARICOM.
The new relationship with CARICOM is in its early stages, with the Office of the Governor actively organizing discussions to establish a solid foundation for this partnership through detailed policies, procedures, and protocols.
Furthermore, a new visa waiver program is being developed to supplement workforce shortages in the Territory, addressing recovery-related demands and meeting critical workforce needs.
Highlighting the significance of these initiatives, Motta emphasized Governor Bryan’s commitment to strengthening ties with CARICOM and contributing to the collective goals of the community. This partnership aims to invest in crucial economic sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and technology, enhance intraregional trade, combat climate change, create job opportunities, improve disaster recovery capabilities, and address pressing issues such as crime, poverty, and public health challenges.
In addition to advancing regional partnerships, Governor Bryan expressed condolences to the family, friends, and listeners of St. Croix businessman and popular talk radio host, Hugh “Mr. P.” Pemberton, who passed away recently.
As Virgin Islanders celebrate VI History Month, Motta quoted Governor Bryan, emphasizing the importance of honoring the legacy of those who have contributed to freedom, democracy, and equality. He encouraged citizens to carry forward this legacy, ensuring that their contributions continue to make an impact both nationally and globally.
With these new initiatives, the US Virgin Islands is poised to strengthen its regional ties, address critical workforce needs, and contribute to the advancement and prosperity of the wider Caribbean community.
