Marigot, Dominica – The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission convened the Third Meeting of the OECS Leaders of the Opposition on Thursday, March 21, 2024. Held virtually, the meeting aimed to foster greater collaboration and dialogue towards advancing regional integration initiatives.
In his opening address, Dr. Didacus Jules, Director General of the OECS, emphasized the crucial role played by the leaders of the opposition in shaping the region’s collective aspirations. He underscored the importance of inclusive consultation and engagement to ensure that regional integration efforts effectively address the needs of all sectors of society.
Leaders of the opposition were briefed on the OECS Commission’s ongoing work across its five strategic priorities, which include accelerating regional integration, promoting economic growth, protecting the environment, enhancing resilience, and promoting equity and inclusion. Directors of the Commission presented updates on projects undertaken during the 2021-2024 triennium and outlined plans for the upcoming period starting in July 2024.
Dr. Jules highlighted the Commission’s commitment to deepening consultation and engagement at all levels to drive genuine progress in regional integration. He emphasized that the meeting aimed not only to provide updates but also to foster a deeper sense of inclusion and collaboration among all stakeholders.
Discussions during the meeting were guided by presentations from each division of the OECS Commission. Leaders of the opposition shared their perspectives, highlighting areas of concern such as increasing crime rates and access to nutritious food. They emphasized the importance of addressing urgent regional challenges through collective action.
Participants also underscored their commitment to promoting the Commission’s regional integration agenda within their respective constituencies. There was a strong focus on the benefits of free movement of people, goods, and services within the Eastern Caribbean Economic Union, as well as efforts to enhance connectivity among OECS member states.
In conclusion, the leaders of the opposition pledged to continue their engagement with the OECS Commission and explore additional avenues for collaboration. They reaffirmed their commitment to advancing regional integration efforts for the benefit of their countries, stakeholders, and communities.
