The inaugural HHV Whitchurch Creamery Ice Cream Inter-School Chess Tournament concluded with an exhilarating display of strategic prowess and keen competition among Dominica’s top schools. St. Mary’s Academy (SMA) emerged as the victors after a thrilling finale, showcasing their mastery of the game.
The tournament, held on Thursday, March 21st, saw four prestigious schools vying for the championship title: Dominica Grammar School (DGS), Orion Academy, Isaiah Thomas Secondary School (ITSS), and St. Mary’s Academy.
Following a format similar to the initial phase held on February 22nd, each school formed a formidable 4-member team, competing under time controls of 30 minutes per player with an additional 30 seconds per move.
In the semifinals, SMA triumphed over Orion Academy with a convincing 3-1 victory, while ITSS secured their spot in the finals by defeating DGS with the same scoreline.
The finals witnessed a fiercely contested battle between SMA and ITSS, culminating in a tie at 2-2 under classical time controls. In a dramatic tie-breaking rapid playoff, SMA clinched the victory with a resounding 3-1 win over their opponents.
In the third-place playoff, Orion Academy emerged victorious over Dominica Grammar School with a commendable 3-1 scoreline.

3rd Place – Orion Academy
The Dominica Chess Federation expressed their heartfelt congratulations to St. Mary’s Academy for their outstanding performance and well-deserved victory. Cash prizes, trophies, and chess sets were awarded to the top teams, with special recognition for the finalists and semifinalists.
