Portsmouth, Dominica – April 10, 2024
Athletes from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) showcased exceptional talent and determination at the XXXVII CARIFTA Aquatics Championships held at the Betty Kelly-Kenning Aquatic Centre in Nassau, The Bahamas.
Over four days of spirited competition, more than 500 athletes from 25 nations engaged in friendly rivalry, highlighting the region’s growing prominence in aquatics. The host team emerged as the overall winner, securing a total of 101 medals.
Representing OECS nations, athletes from Martinique, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Lucia, Grenada, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines made their mark in the medal count, demonstrating their prowess in the pool.
One standout performer was Antoine Destang of Saint Lucia, competing in the 15-17 boys category for the first time. Destang, based in the USA, amassed an impressive 53 points, clinching gold medals in the 100m and 200m butterfly events, positioning him second in his division. Notably, Destang was the high point winner in the 13-14 boys category in the previous year’s championships.
Ellie Shaw of Antigua and Barbuda, a former Junior Sportswoman of the Year, secured her second gold medal of the championships in the 15-17 girls 100m breaststroke, adding to her earlier triumph in the 200m breaststroke. Shaw also earned a silver medal in the sprint version of the breaststroke.
Grenada’s Sara Dowden displayed remarkable strength and perseverance, winning a bronze medal in the Girls’ 15-17 400-metre race. In a poignant post-race interview, Dowden revealed that she dedicated her performance to her father, who had passed away just one day prior.
The OECS Commission extends heartfelt congratulations to all athletes for their outstanding performance at the CARIFTA Aquatics Championships. Sincere condolences are also extended to Sara Dowden and her family during this difficult time.
