Castries, St Lucia – June 25, 2024: The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) has issued a strong statement regarding the recent actions of the United States of America (USA) concerning the Republic of Cuba. While welcoming the decision by the US Government to remove Cuba from its list of states “not cooperating fully” in the fight against terrorism, the OECS expressed profound concern and disappointment over the continued inclusion of Cuba on the US State Department’s list of State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT).
The OECS Commission’s official statement highlights the arbitrary nature of the decision, denouncing the accusations as baseless. The organisation emphasizes that maintaining Cuba on the SSOT list has caused and continues to cause immense hardship and suffering to the Cuban people. The OECS calls on the United States Government to immediately remove Cuba from that list.
Furthermore, the OECS reaffirms its rejection of the unilateral imposition of the 62-year-old economic, commercial, and financial embargo against Cuba by the United States. This embargo, along with the designation of Cuba as a “State Sponsor of Terrorism,” is deemed unjust and wrongfully imposed upon the Cuban people. The OECS insists that these measures must be terminated immediately to bring relief to the harsh conditions endured by the Cuban populace.
In its statement, the OECS reiterates its solidarity with the Government and people of Cuba, underscoring the region’s support for Cuba amidst these ongoing challenges.
