Her Excellency Sylvanie Burton, DAH, President of Dominica, is leading a high-level Dominican delegation to the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The assembly, taking place under the theme “Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations,” brings together global leaders to address the most pressing challenges facing humanity today.
President Burton is scheduled to deliver Dominica’s official address to the General Assembly on Wednesday, September 25th, in the afternoon session. In her address, President Burton is expected to highlight Dominica’s progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), its commitment to sustainable development, and its proactive measures in addressing global challenges like climate change.
Key discussions at the UNGA include progress on the SDGs, overcoming recent global shocks, and considering three forward-looking initiatives: the ‘Pact for the Future,’ the ‘Global Digital Compact,’ and the ‘Declaration on Future Generations.’ These initiatives are expected to outline the world’s development path in the coming years.
The Dominican delegation accompanying President Burton includes First Gentleman Mr. Gilbert Burton; Honourable Dr. Vince Henderson, Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Business, Trade and Energy; Dominica’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, H.E. Philbert Aaron; Deputy Permanent Representative H.E. Kelver Darroux; Consular Sheldon Peter Anthony; and Assistant Superintendent of Police Valda Powell.
While President Burton is attending the UNGA, Her Excellency Josette Matthew will serve as Acting President of the Commonwealth of Dominica.
