Discover Dominica Authority has announced the launch of a new non-stop flight from New York/Newark’s Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Dominica’s Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM), operated by United Airlines. The service, which begins on February 15, 2025, will run every Saturday, marking United Airlines’ first direct flight to the island and Dominica’s second non-stop route from the United States.
This new connection comes as a result of recent upgrades to Douglas-Charles Airport, including a 6,351-foot runway extension and the addition of runway grooving to accommodate larger aircraft and improve safety. The terminal has also been enhanced to increase capacity and operational efficiency.
Hon. Denise Charles-Pemberton, Dominica’s Minister of Tourism, welcomed the new flight route, stating, “This new service by United Airlines is a major step forward toward the island realizing the aggressive goal that it has set for itself and is part of the strategy being pursued in concert with the development of the new international airport. This route will help alleviate the access constraints faced by the destination over the years.”
Boost to Dominica’s Tourism Industry
The new flight from the tri-state area, one of Dominica’s largest U.S. markets, is expected to significantly boost the island’s tourism industry. With nearly 500 new hotel rooms planned for 2025, Dominica is preparing for what is anticipated to be one of its busiest travel seasons yet.
Ms. Marva Williams, CEO of Discover Dominica Authority, emphasized the importance of this development, saying, “This new service will enable Dominica to more fully capitalize on the increasing interest from travelers in visiting the destination. The added capacity will also encourage U.S.-based tour operators to confidently book group travel to Dominica, sharing our world-class scuba diving, hiking, wellness, and cultural experiences with more travelers than ever before.”
Flight Launch Coincides with Mas Domnik Carnival
The launch of the United Airlines service will coincide with Dominica’s renowned Mas Domnik Carnival, taking place on March 3-4, 2025. Known as the “Real Mas,” this vibrant event celebrates traditional Carnival customs, featuring calypso music, competitions, and lively festivities. Further details about the 2025 Mas Domnik Carnival will be announced in the coming months.
