Miami Heat legend Udonis Haslem is set to receive one of the NBA’s highest honors as the team announces the retirement of his iconic No. 40 jersey. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on January 19, during halftime of the Heat’s game against the Atlanta Hawks.
With an illustrious 20-season career, Udonis Haslem solidified his legacy as a key figure in the Miami Heat’s success. Boasting three NBA Championships and holding the franchise record for the most rebounds, Haslem’s impact on the team’s history is undeniable.
Heat President Pat Riley expressed his admiration, stating, “It’s about a great legacy, a Thank You moment that has been earned over 20 years of being an incredible championship player and most importantly, the best leader.”
Haslem, who served as the team captain for the last 16 of his 20 seasons, will join an elite group of Heat players with retired jerseys, including Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade.
The Miami native played a crucial role in all three of the Heat’s NBA title victories, making him one of only two players, alongside Dwyane Wade, to achieve this feat. Haslem’s contributions extend beyond championships, with seven Eastern Conference Championships, 12 Divisional Titles, 16 postseason appearances, and recognition as an NBA All-Rookie Second Team selection.
Remarkably, Haslem holds a unique place in NBA history, standing among legends Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki as one of only three players to spend at least 20 years with a single franchise.
Retiring as the NBA’s oldest active player at the age of 43, Haslem left an indelible mark on the sport. In a fitting transition, he assumed the role of Miami’s Vice President of Basketball Development in November, showcasing his continued commitment to the Heat organization.
