DOMINICA REAFFIRMS ITS SUPPORT FOR THE ONE CHINA POLICY FOLLOWING THE TAIWANESE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

PRESS STATEMENT

January 13, 2024, Roseau, Dominica: The Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica reiterates its unwavering support and commitment to the One China Policy and the peaceful reunification of the People’s Republic of China and the province of Taiwan, following the Taiwanese Presidential Election.

Since establishing diplomatic relations with China in 2004, Dominica has consistently articulated its adherence to the One China Policy, a stance firmly grounded in well-established international law, as underscored by United Nations Resolution 2758 of October 1971. According to this resolution, the People’s Republic of China is recognized as the only legitimate government of China and holds its rightful membership in the United Nations.

Dominica firmly asserts that the future of Taiwan is an internal matter within the sovereign affairs of the People’s Republic of China. The Taiwanese Presidential election, including the recent one on January 13, 2024, is viewed as an integral part of China’s internal politics and does not, in any way, represent a lawful mechanism for the independence of Taiwan. This election is consistent with previous instances in this regard.

At the core of Dominica’s bilateral relations with the People’s Republic of China lies a commitment to mutual respect for China’s sovereignty and a pledge of non-interference in its internal affairs. Despite any contrary attempts or pronouncements, Taiwan remains an integral part of the One China principle, regardless of the outcomes of the local government elections held on January 13, 2024.

Since 2004, Dominica has nurtured deep and friendly relations with the People’s Republic of China, steadfastly recognizing the One China principle. The government remains dedicated to fortifying the bonds of this enduring friendship.

END.
