In a recent memo circulated to medical professionals at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital, the Dominica Hospitals Authority announced the temporary suspension of elective surgical lists due to a shortage of essential medical supplies. The memo, dated January 11, 2024, addressed the scarcity of pethidine and spinal needles, leading to the decision to halt elective surgeries from Monday, January 15, 2024.
Hospital Medical Director, Dr. Ruby Blanc, expressed regret at the necessity of this decision and assured the medical community and the public that significant efforts are underway to rectify the supply shortage. While elective surgeries are temporarily suspended, the hospital will still be able to accommodate some minor cases and those involving the lower limb.
Any requests for elective surgeries during this period are required to be discussed with Dr. Becky Jno Baptiste, Officer in Charge of Anesthesia, before submitting names for consideration.
The memo emphasized that the situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided to medical staff and the public as soon as the supply issues are resolved. The hospital administration is committed to ensuring that normal elective surgical services resume promptly.
