The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas has issued a stark travel warning for Americans planning to visit the island nation, citing a concerning surge in murders since the beginning of 2024. With 18 murders reported since January 1, much of it attributed to gang violence, the embassy’s advisory urges travelers to exercise extreme caution.
According to the embassy’s warning, the murders have occurred at all hours, including broad daylight on the streets, with retaliatory gang violence identified as the primary motive behind the incidents. As a result, travelers are advised to be particularly vigilant, especially in the eastern portion of New Providence Island, and to maintain a low profile during their stay.
In addition to cautioning against physical resistance during robberies, the embassy also emphasizes the importance of exercising caution when traveling at night, given the heightened risk of encountering criminal activity.
The State Department has elevated its advisory level for the Bahamas to “Exercise Increased Caution,” attributing the rise in murders to gang violence. The warning highlights that violent crimes, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas, urging visitors to remain vigilant at all times, particularly when staying at short-term vacation rental properties lacking private security presence.
Despite attempts to reach out to the Bahamian Embassy in Washington D.C., no response was received. However, Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis has pledged to take decisive action in response to the surge in crime, announcing plans to implement roadblocks and increase police presence to enhance public safety.
“We will not violate anyone’s civil liberties, but you are likely to be impacted by more roadblocks and unannounced police action,” Prime Minister Davis stated. “This may inconvenience your plans, but it’s a small price to pay for safer streets and fewer violent crimes.”
The escalation in crime has prompted similar travel advisories from the State Department, including a “reconsider travel” advisory issued for Jamaica earlier this week. The warning for Jamaica cites common occurrences of violent crimes such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides, with local police often facing challenges in effectively responding to serious criminal incidents.
