Today marks a significant milestone in the history of Grenada as the nation celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence. On February 7, 1974, Grenada achieved independence, and today, the nation, along with Carriacou and Petite Martinique, commemorates five decades of sovereignty under the theme “One People, One Journey, One Future.” The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission extends warmest congratulations to the Government and People of Grenada on this historic occasion.
To mark this auspicious day, the OECS Commission hosted a virtual flag-raising ceremony, which featured remarks from the Prime Minister of Grenada, the Honourable Dickon Mitchell, and the Director-General of the OECS, His Excellency Dr. Didacus Jules. The ceremony also included a prayer offered by Reverend John Douglas, Deacon of the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Archdiocese of Castries.
In his address, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell reflected on Grenada’s journey over the past fifty years, acknowledging the strength, resilience, and rich history of its people. He emphasized the nation’s achievements and its significant impact on the global stage, despite its modest size.
Director-General Dr. Didacus Jules joined in commemorating Grenada’s milestone, highlighting the challenges and triumphs faced by the nation since gaining independence. He praised the resilience, unity, and diversity of the Grenadian people, underscoring the importance of preserving the legacy of independence for future generations.
