UNICEF and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) have signed a renewed Partnership Agreement, in a significant development for children’s welfare across the Eastern Caribbean aimed at improving the lives of children and young people in OECS Member States.
The agreement, signed on March 26, 2024, in Castries, Saint Lucia, underscores a commitment to support the OECS Human and Social Development Strategy. It focuses on crucial areas aligned with UNICEF and OECS missions, including Child Protection, Social Protection, Inclusive Education, Youth Engagement, and Climate Resilience.
Dr. Didacus Jules, Director General of the OECS Commission, highlighted the significance of this partnership, describing it as a model of collaboration and engagement that enriches both organizations. Dr. Jules noted that the new partnership extends to include British Overseas Territories as Associate Member States, further strengthening integration within the OECS.
Pieter Bult, UNICEF Representative for the Eastern Caribbean, emphasized the invaluable nature of the partnership with the OECS Commission. He expressed a commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of interventions, particularly in addressing the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) within the OECS.
“Our partnership with the OECS is invaluable,” remarked Mr. Bult. “We aim to make a real difference, especially in combating child poverty post-COVID and advancing Early Childhood Education.”
The OECS plans to elevate the visibility of UNICEF-funded programs, incorporating beneficiary testimonials and a documentary showcasing key achievements of the enduring partnership.
Both organizations reaffirmed their commitment to collaborative efforts, with Dr. Jules emphasizing equality and shared success in all partnerships.
