Castries, St. Lucia — The 2024 OECS Invitational Boxing Championships has officially been launched, heralding a new era for sports within the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). The announcement was made on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at the OECS Commission Headquarters in Morne Fortune, Castries, St. Lucia, unveiling the new tournament logo, event details, and future plans.
David “Shakes” Christopher, President of the St. Lucia Boxing Association, expressed optimism about the tournament’s potential to unify OECS citizens and revitalize the OECS Sports Desk. This sentiment aligns with the goals set at the Inaugural OECS Council of Ministers: Youth and Sports meeting held in March, which called for the revival of OECS Sports Championships across various disciplines.
The Director of Sports in St. Lucia, Mr. Clivus Jules, confirmed the government’s commitment to the successful hosting of the event. He emphasized the importance of such initiatives in promoting sports among youth in the region.
The tournament, scheduled for July 26th and 27th, will feature the best Caribbean youth, novice, junior, and elite boxers. Tournament Director Shannon Lebourne assured that the St. Lucia Boxing Association (SLBA) will deliver a spectacular event at the Vigie Sports Complex in Castries.
Former SLBA President and Veteran Sports Commentator Dr. Joseph “Reds” Perreira commended the OECS Commission’s support and urged corporate businesses across the OECS to provide tangible resources to the championships and regional sports initiatives.
The 2024 OECS Invitational Boxing Championships will see participation from over 120 visiting delegates. Details on the tournament schedule, participating countries, and individual bouts will be publicized through local and regional media, as well as online platforms.
