Roseau, Dominica — In an intense and thrilling World Cup Qualifying match on Sunday, June 9th, the Men’s Senior National Team of Dominica nearly pulled off a stunning comeback against Jamaica at Windsor Park. Despite falling behind by three goals, the team rallied late, scoring twice, but ultimately fell just short with a final score of 3-2 in favor of Jamaica.
Coming off a heavy 6-0 defeat to Guatemala, Dominica showcased remarkable resilience and determination. The home crowd witnessed a different team take the field, as Dominica pressed the Jamaican side from the outset. Coach Ellington Sabin made a strategic change to the starting lineup, bringing in Audel Laville to replace Javid George. Laville made an immediate impact with a strong start.
The match remained tightly contested until the 31st minute when Shamar Nicholson of Jamaica capitalized on a defensive lapse, scoring the opening goal. Jamaica extended their lead in the 43rd minute with Kaheim Dixon taking advantage of another defensive error, sending the visitors into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Despite the deficit, Dominica continued to fight, showing grit and determination. However, they struggled to break through Jamaica’s defense. Jamaica seemed to secure their victory with a third goal in the 80th minute, as Shamar Nicholson converted from the penalty spot.
In the final moments, Dominica found a second wind. Substitute Javid George scored in the 83rd minute after a brilliant through ball from fellow substitute Savio Anselm. The momentum shifted further when Troy Jules scored off a stunning free kick in the 89th minute, bringing the score to 3-2.
With the support of the roaring home crowd, Dominica pressed hard for an equalizer. Despite their relentless efforts, they ran out of time, and the match ended with Jamaica narrowly securing the victory.
After the match, Head Coach Ellington Sabin expressed pride in his team’s performance despite the loss. “I’m proud of the fight back from the team. They showed great character and determination,” Sabin remarked.
Team Captain Glenson Prince echoed the coach’s sentiments, thanking the thousands of fans for their unwavering support. “The support from the fans was incredible. We gave it our all, and their energy kept us going,” Prince stated.
