Roseau, Dominica – August 3, 2024:
The Commonwealth of Dominica Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Social Services is advising the public to take necessary precautions in light of the recent increase in respiratory illnesses.
Key Precautionary Measures:
- Hand Hygiene: Regularly wash hands with soap and water. When soap and water are unavailable, use hand sanitizer.
- Respiratory Hygiene: Practice proper respiratory hygiene by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing.
- Surface Cleaning: Frequently clean surfaces that are often touched, such as doorknobs, light switches, and phones.
- Mask Wearing: Wear masks in crowded or enclosed spaces, especially if you feel unwell or are in close contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of respiratory illness.
The Ministry highlights that symptoms of COVID-19 often resemble those of the flu or other respiratory illnesses, including fever, runny nose, cough, and sore throat. Individuals experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms, particularly severe symptoms like shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, are urged to visit their nearest healthcare facility.
To further protect vulnerable individuals, the Ministry announces that, starting Friday, August 2nd, 2024, only one family member at a time will be allowed to visit patients at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital. Additionally, masks must be worn at all times during visits.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Social Services emphasizes the importance of these measures in preventing the spread of respiratory illnesses and protecting public health.
