A peaceful protest by truck and heavy equipment operators near the capital city of Roseau has sparked growing concern across Dominica. The protest, which began earlier today, is centered around the demand by local truckers for fair compensation and increased involvement in the island’s ongoing international airport development project as well as other major capital projects being undertaken by the state.
Representatives from various truckers’ associations have stated that the protest is not just about their own livelihoods but also about national equity, as they claim that many local operators are being overlooked in favor of foreign contractors who are reaping the benefits of the island’s major infrastructure projects.
“This fight is for all of us,” said the president of the TIPA Truckers Association in Dominica, who spoke to local media on-site. He emphasized that truckers are fighting for their fair share of the project and for the well-being of local businesses, which they believe are being sidelined.
The protest comes just two days after Dominica celebrated National Flag Day, a symbol of national unity, and as the nation prepares to mark its 46th Anniversary of Independence. The growing discontent has attracted other citizens, and the situation appears to be evolving into a larger demonstration, with increasing tensions reported at the scene.
According to the president of the TIPA Truckers Association, the group has been in negotiations with the Prime Minister of Dominica. The Prime Minister reportedly committed to ensuring that local truckers are engaged in the transportation of cement and other materials from the island’s main port at Woodbridge Bay to the airport development site, with a rate of XCD $85 per trip. The association is preparing a letter of undertaking to formalize this agreement.
In addition, there are ongoing negotiations for the release of a trucker who was reportedly arrested during the protest.
