Sixty-two of Dominica’s most promising young athletes are set to carry the nation’s sporting pride to St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the 2025 edition of the Windward Islands School Games (WISG), which runs from July 26 to August 2. The announcement was made by the Sports Division within the Ministry of Culture, Youth, Sports and Community Development, affirming the island’s continued commitment to youth athletic development and regional representation.
Student-athletes will compete in five key disciplines: athletics, football, netball, basketball (boys and girls), and volleyball (boys and girls). Backed by months of rigorous training and national school-based competitions, the team has been selected from the Sports Division’s robust school sports program. The delegation will be supported by 11 officials including coaches and coordinators.
Dominica is entering this year’s games with confidence, having placed second overall at the 2023 edition of the WISG. The island hopes to build on that success with a team comprised of athletes from schools across the country, including the Dominica State College (DSC), Portsmouth Secondary School (PSS), Convent High School (CHS), Northeast Comprehensive (NECS), and several others.
Among the standout selections are:
- Girls: Natalia Daway (CHS), Saniah Laurent (NECS), Cardisha Thomas (DSC), Akiesha Luke (GSS), and Kaywanna Valerie (NECS), among others.
- Boys: Meshach Duboulay (ITSS), Dinari Dyer (DSC), K’Omah Telemque (PCSS), Kalani Abraham (NECS), and Khumaar John-Baptiste (PSS), just to name a few.
The 2025 edition of the Games also takes on added significance as the region continues to foster deeper collaboration through youth sport development. The Windward Islands School Games have long been a critical breeding ground for future Caribbean athletic stars and serve as a platform for unity, discipline, and healthy competition among the youth of Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and Grenada.
Minister for Sports, Culture, Youth and Community Development, Hon. Roselyn Paul, has voiced her support and encouragement for the team, stating:
“Our athletes are not only competing for medals, they are representing the values of resilience, unity, and Dominican excellence. We stand behind them as they showcase our talent and national pride on the regional stage.”
The Ministry continues to emphasize the importance of youth sports in national development and envisions the WISG as an important step in building athletes who may one day represent Dominica on global platforms such as CARIFTA, Commonwealth Games, and the Olympics.
As the young athletes prepare to don the national colors, Dominicans everywhere are urged to rally behind the team in spirit and pride.
