In a major win for Dominica’s air access strategy and tourism development goals, the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica has announced a significant expansion in regional flight services, courtesy of Caribbean Airlines (CAL). The new schedule not only reinstates direct service between San Juan, Puerto Rico and Dominica, but also strengthens the vital air bridge with Trinidad and Tobago, and by extension, CAL’s international hubs in New York (JFK) and Toronto.
This announcement comes just weeks after Silver Airways ceased its operations to Dominica, severing a key regional link and causing concern among tourism stakeholders and Dominican nationals abroad. However, CAL’s swift response—developed in partnership with the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) and the Ministry of Tourism—restores confidence in the island’s connectivity strategy.
Strategic Scheduling for Seamless Travel
Under the revised schedule:
- Flights from San Juan to Dominica will depart at 4:00 p.m., providing ample time for U.S. mainland passengers to connect through Puerto Rico’s key air hub.
- The return leg departs Dominica at 10:00 a.m., easing travel stress and improving the overall passenger experience with shorter layovers and more convenient transit.
The move not only boosts ease of travel for Dominican nationals residing in Puerto Rico and the U.S., but also streamlines access for North American tourists heading to the “Nature Island.”
Increased Port of Spain–Dominica service is also a game-changer, especially for travelers connecting through CAL’s major international gateways:
- Toronto–Dominica service will increase from once weekly to four weekly southbound and twice weekly northbound, providing new options for the growing Dominican-Canadian diaspora and leisure travelers.
- These enhancements also pave the way for smoother multi-destination Caribbean tourism, with Trinidadians more easily able to explore Dominica’s waterfalls, hot springs, and eco-adventures.
Tourism Gains and Airport Readiness
The Hon. Denise Charles-Pemberton, Dominica’s Minister for Tourism, hailed the agreement as both a recovery milestone and a forward-looking solution:
“The rapid reinstatement of San Juan service and the boosted Trinidad connection reinforce our shared commitment with Caribbean Airlines to strengthen Dominica’s tourism future. These routes are timely, impactful, and traveler-focused—perfectly aligned with our plans for enhanced global air access as we prepare for our new international airport.”
As Dominica moves steadily toward the construction and completion of its international airport, due to redefine its aviation and tourism landscape, partnerships like this with CAL are a crucial step in expanding the island’s reach and tourism competitiveness.

CAL’s decision to plug the connectivity gap left by Silver Airways also sends a strong message of regional airline resilience and cooperation.
