The Commonwealth of Dominica took center stage at the prestigious Harmony Summit: A Gathering with Wisdom Carriers, hosted on July 7, 2025, by His Majesty King Charles III’s charity, The King’s Foundation, at Highgrove Gardens in the United Kingdom.
Representing Dominica at the landmark event was Honourable Cozier Frederick, Minister for Environment, Rural Modernisation, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency Empowerment. The summit convened Indigenous leaders, scientists, economists, and policymakers in a shared dialogue on climate resilience, sustainability, and global biodiversity.
Minister Frederick used the opportunity to proudly showcase Dominica’s Kalinago heritage, placing emphasis on the island’s leadership in marine conservation and community-led environmental initiatives. During the event, he also engaged directly with His Majesty King Charles III, highlighting Dominica’s efforts to protect its marine ecosystems, especially the iconic sperm whale population.
“We are aware of your appreciation of the work we do in Dominica, both in working with my Kalinago people and also protecting our marine kin—the sperm whale,” Minister Frederick shared with His Majesty.
Highgrove Gardens, the private residence of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla, has become a beacon for environmental education and sustainability under the stewardship of The King’s Foundation. The estate played host to dialogues rooted in both Indigenous wisdom and Western science—intended to forge new pathways for healing the planet.
Minister Frederick participated in thematic sessions on nature finance and community resilience, drawing attention to Dominica’s progressive environmental policies and the central role of traditional knowledge in climate adaptation.
“This Summit was a reaffirmation that the path we are on, rooted in Indigenous wisdom, community resilience, and environmental integrity, is not only necessary but globally relevant,” he noted. “Dominica is ready to walk in partnership with others who share this vision.”
He further stated in an interview that The King’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship “will help others appreciate the importance of Indigenous peoples in the protection of Mother Earth.”
Acting High Commissioner to the UK, Ms. Janet Charles, also formed part of Dominica’s delegation, participating in discussions aimed at strengthening partnerships and forging new avenues for collaboration.
Dominica’s presence at the Harmony Summit signals a strong commitment to global environmental leadership grounded in local knowledge systems and sustainable development principles.
