St. Kitts – November 26, 2023
The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), headquartered in St. Kitts, has announced that its Monetary Council has given approval for the replacement of Queen Elizabeth II’s image on the Eastern Caribbean (EC) currency. The proposed replacement is an emblem featuring the flags of ECCB member countries.
In an advertisement, the ECCB stated that the new image “provides a more holistic reflection of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU).” The ECCB serves as the central bank for several islands, including Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts-Nevis, Montserrat, and Anguilla.
The Eastern Caribbean currency, the successor to the British West Indies dollar, has been in circulation since 1965. This move is seen as a symbolic step towards reflecting the collective identity and sovereignty of the ECCU member countries on their currency.
