BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS | July 29, 2026 — Barbados today bid an emotional farewell to one of the Caribbean’s greatest sons as The Right Excellent Sir Garfield St. Aubrun Sobers was laid to rest following a State Funeral and National Thanksgiving Service at the historic Kensington Oval.
Thousands of Barbadians, regional leaders, government officials, former teammates, cricket legends and admirers gathered to celebrate the extraordinary life of the man widely regarded as the greatest all-round cricketer in the history of the sport.
The solemn proceedings included full military honours, ceremonial processions, cultural tributes and moments of reflection that celebrated not only Sir Garry’s unmatched sporting achievements but also his lifelong contribution to Barbados and the wider Caribbean.
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, in paying tribute to the National Hero, described Sir Garfield Sobers as a symbol of Barbadian excellence whose legacy transcends generations.
“The finest innings do not end in silence. They end with an entire nation rising to say thank you.”
The service was attended by several Caribbean dignitaries and distinguished guests who joined the people of Barbados in honouring a man whose name became synonymous with sporting greatness.
Sir Garfield Sobers’ remarkable career transformed cricket forever. Among his many achievements were 8,032 Test runs, 235 Test wickets, a then-world record 365 not out, and becoming the first cricketer to strike six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket. Beyond the statistics, Sir Garry became a global ambassador for Barbados, West Indies cricket and Caribbean excellence.
As his cortege made its final journey through the streets of Bridgetown before arriving at Kensington Oval, thousands lined the route in silent respect, applauding a life that inspired generations across the world.
While Sir Garfield Sobers has played his final innings, his legacy will continue to live on in every aspiring cricketer and every Caribbean citizen who believes that greatness can emerge from these islands.
Today, Barbados did not simply bury a National Hero.
It celebrated an immortal Caribbean legend.
