The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy is actively addressing a shortage of animal feed that is currently impacting the livestock subsector. This shortage is a result of adverse weather conditions at sea, preventing shipping vessels from docking on January 5th and January 11th. Furthermore, consignments of animal feed anticipated to arrive on January 19th will not be delivered as scheduled.
The Ministry of Agriculture reaffirms its commitment to the welfare of livestock farmers and is working closely with those affected to implement feeding and management strategies. In response to the urgent situation, the Ministry convened a meeting on Monday, January 15th, with animal feed suppliers and the President of the Poultry and Livestock Growers Association to devise immediate solutions and prevent future shortages. This circumstance underscores the government’s decision to invest in an animal feed plant, ensuring a reliable and cost-effective option for livestock farmers on the island.
As a short-term measure, the Ministry has expedited an order for animal feed from a neighboring island, with expected arrival as early as Thursday, January 18th. Seventy (70) percent of the consignment is allocated for layer birds, the most affected due to the scarcity of commercial feed.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue, and Green Economy assures livestock farmers of the government’s unwavering commitment to take all necessary actions to provide relief at the earliest possible time. The livestock subsector is integral to national efforts in achieving food and nutrition security, and the Government of Dominica remains resolute in safeguarding the livelihoods of livestock farmers on the island.
