A dense plume of Saharan dust has settled over the eastern and southern Caribbean, creating a hazy atmosphere across the region. The dust, carried by winds from the Sahara Desert in North Africa, has shrouded countries from Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago in the south to Barbados and Saint Lucia in the east.
Local meteorological agencies have issued advisories to alert residents to the health and safety risks associated with the dust. The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service cautioned that “air quality is thereby reduced and sensitive groups should take the necessary precautions.”
As a result of the reduced visibility caused by the moderate to thick haze, a small craft advisory has been issued, urging caution to maritime travelers.

Saharan dust events are not uncommon in the Caribbean, with particles transported thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean by trade winds. The fine particles in Saharan dust can irritate the respiratory system, leading to coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. People with pre-existing respiratory conditions are advised to stay indoors as much as possible and use air purifiers or masks when venturing outside.
Additionally, individuals with allergies may experience exacerbated symptoms due to the influx of dust particles in the air.
