Wesley, Dominica – July 19, 2024: The vibrant community of Wesley, Dominica, gathered for the much-anticipated launch of the 2024 Wesley Reunion activities, under the resonant theme “La We Konnek” (Let’s Connect). Her Excellency Mrs. Athenia Benjamin, Dominica’s Ambassador for Diaspora Affairs, delivered a stirring address that emphasized unity and collaboration among Wesley residents, both at home and abroad.
In her keynote speech, Ambassador Benjamin expressed her excitement for the reunion, underscoring its significance as a time for the community to come together and work towards common goals. “It is reunion time again. Our theme for this Reunion 2024 is ‘La We Konnek.’ I will say to us here today who are within the sound of my voice, let all of us connect to make Wesley the unified community where each and every one of us, regardless of where we reside, can come together to ensure that our community of Wesley progresses,” she stated.
Highlighting the strategic advantages of their location, Ambassador Benjamin said, “We are situated in the best piece of real estate in Dominica and are positioned to excel and do well. The onus is on every one of us to take advantage of all the opportunities before us. We should, as a community, seek to uplift those among us who have the potential to do well.”
As a proud Wesley native, Ambassador Benjamin praised the global diaspora’s skills and expertise, urging them to contribute to the village’s growth. She outlined her vision for ‘La We Konnek,’ focusing on several key areas:
- Education: Encouraging students to excel academically.
- Health: Promoting healthy habits to continue producing centenarians and introducing healthier lifestyles.
- Mentorship: Guiding young people in their career paths to motivate and support their success.
- Elders: Learning from the life experiences of the elders to enhance the quality of life.
- Sustained Connection: Building on previous gains, such as the Wesley Diaspora’s commitment to rehabilitating Cabana, which will provide employment opportunities.
Ambassador Benjamin also called on local residents to actively support community development projects. “As the local reunion committee routinely asks for help with community development projects, join in and be supportive,” she urged.
