Government of Dominica Appoints Leroy ‘Wadix’ Charles as Cultural Ambassador

The Government of Dominica proudly announces the appointment of Mr. Leroy ‘Wadix’ Charles as a Cultural Ambassador for the Commonwealth of Dominica. This prestigious appointment recognizes Mr. Charles’ significant contributions to promoting Dominica’s cultural art forms and expressions, highlighting the Government’s dedication to preserving the nation’s rich cultural heritage.

Leroy Wadix Charles -Dominica’s Newest Cultural Ambassador

Role and Responsibilities:

As Cultural Ambassador, Mr. Charles will play a pivotal role in several key areas:

  • Development of Creole Language Policy: He will assist in crafting a comprehensive policy for the Creole language in Dominica.
  • Consultancy on National Festivals: Mr. Charles will offer his expertise in organizing national events such as Independence Celebrations, the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF), Carnival, DOMFESTA, and Emancipation Day Observance.
  • Promotion in the French West Indies: He will help promote Dominica’s festivals in neighboring French territories and foster cultural and sporting exchanges with these regions.

A Legacy of Cultural Advocacy:

Leroy ‘Wadix’ Charles has been a stalwart advocate for Cadence-lypso and other Creole music forms since his early days with the Young Cultural Dramatists and as a Co-Founder of WadiCole. He is a founding member of the World Creole Music Festival and has served as the chairman of its band selection committee. His dedication extends to the “Konmité pou Etid Kwéyòl (KEK),” the Board of Directors of the Alliance Française de la Dominique, and his role as President of the Creole Heartbeat Movement. Additionally, Mr. Charles hosts the long-running Creole music program, Hit Parade Creole, on DBS Radio.

Accolades and Recognition:

Mr. Charles’ relentless advocacy for Creole culture has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Golden Drum Award and the Meritorious Service Award from the Government of Dominica. In 2023, the Folk Research Center in St. Lucia honored him for his dedication to promoting and preserving the Kwéyòl language.
