ROSEAU, Dominica – The Government of Dominica, through the Ministry of Sports, has reaffirmed its dedication to sports development with a series of investments in community-based infrastructure aimed at boosting grassroots talent, promoting wellness, and enhancing recreational access across the island.
Over the past year, the Ministry has executed several upgrades and new projects in line with a national strategy to ensure that sporting opportunities are available to all — from youth and women to senior citizens.
Lighting Up Communities for Extended Access
In a major achievement, lighting upgrades were completed at eight community playing fields, enabling extended playing hours and the organization of structured leagues and tournaments. The upgraded facilities include:
- Teza Grounds, Mahaut
- Grand Fond Playing Field
- Centre Playing Field, Grand Bay
- Anse du Mai Playing Field
- Vieille Case Playing Field
- Belle Vue Chopin Playing Field
- Soufrière Playing Field
- Glanvillia Playing Field
These enhancements are already being used to foster community engagement and healthy outdoor activity. According to the Ministry, assessments are underway for lighting additional playing facilities as demand grows.
$14 Million Upgrade for Windsor Park Sports Stadium
A significant milestone has also been announced for the Windsor Park Sports Stadium, Dominica’s flagship national sporting venue. A $14 million investment from the Dominica National Lotteries Commission will fund the complete restoration of its lighting infrastructure. The upgrade will bring the stadium up to international standards, including the installation of a new control room and state-of-the-art lighting systems.
Hard Court Development Accelerates
The Ministry is actively developing netball and basketball hard courts in several communities:
- Recently completed courts in La Plaine and Penville are now open for public use.
- In Portsmouth, a newly constructed hard court at Benjamin’s Park is set to be equipped with bleachers and lighting to support evening events and improve spectator experience.
Further upgrades to community courts islandwide are in the pipeline, reflecting the government’s plan to decentralize sports access and facilities.
BNTF 10 Project: Targeted Facility Upgrades
Under the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) 10, the Ministry is overseeing two key upgrades:
- Trafalgar Basketball Hard Court – Nearing completion, this project includes a media center, covered seating, washrooms, changing rooms, and perimeter fencing.
- Delices Playing Field – Undergoing significant improvements including a small pavilion and turf enhancements.
Synthetic Track Development in the North
In collaboration with the Dominica Athletics Association and international partners, plans are advancing for the construction of a synthetic track at Pointe Ronde, a project long-anticipated by athletes and coaches. The facility will become a national hub for athletics training and competition, further enhancing Dominica’s regional competitiveness in track and field.
