The melody of steelpan music is set to enchant the streets of Roseau as Dominica immerses itself in the rich tradition of Pan in the City this Saturday, January 20th as part of the Real Mas Carnival activities. In an address at the 3rd weekly press conference of the Discover Dominica/ Dominica Festivals Committee, delivered earlier today by Giselle Hyacinth, senior cultural officer at the Division of Culture, the upcoming event promises to turn Roseau into the largest pan yard, resonating with the sweet symphony of steelpan music from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Last week, the Ole Mas Festival in Pointe-Michelle set the stage for a vibrant carnival season, and now, the focus shifts to the rhythmic allure of steelpan music. Giselle Hyacinth expressed gratitude to the Ole Mas groups, the police force, DFC, and the patrons who contributed to the success of Ole Mas 2024. With a lively atmosphere in Pointe-Michelle, the anticipation for Pan in the City is palpable.
Highlighting the significance of steelpan in Dominica’s cultural tapestry, Hyacinth emphasized the need to preserve and promote this art form. Acknowledging the contributions of past greats like Mr. Edward André, Moses Dominic, Wilfred Panto John-Baptiste, and Alan John-Baptiste, she stressed the importance of preventing this musical legacy from becoming dormant.
Pan in the City 2024 is not merely an event; it’s a celebration of the coolest kids in pan, particularly in the possie-culture pan. The maestro and veteran, Bob Dee, will take center stage at Jays Bookstore, adding his seasoned expertise to the musical extravaganza. it is also a celebration of Dominica’s musical heritage, and everyone is encouraged to join in the festivities, supporting steelpan from 10 a.m. onwards to 2 p.m.
