After several hours in transit and facing what many have alleged as a failure to acquire necessary visas, the Dominica Men’s National Football Team has safely arrived in Guatemala. The team is set to play against Guatemala tonight, June 5th, 2024, at 10 PM Eastern Caribbean time.
Team Manager Kurt Christmas addressed the public via a video post on the Dominica Football Association’s Facebook page, providing an update on the team’s situation and their readiness for the upcoming match. In an interview with the team’s media officer, Garvin Richards, Christmas assured fans that the players are in good spirits and fully prepared to give their best performance.
“Obviously, some changes had to be made, but we’re confident that, as it stands, we’ll be able to participate in the game. The players are excited and pumped up; they’re ready to play and give their all,” Christmas stated.
When asked about the message conveyed to the players, Christmas emphasized the unwavering support from the team’s management. “The management has been on the ball. The coaches, the manager, we’ve been working closely together to handle the situation. The players are fine now, and I’m sure they’ll be fine after tomorrow,” he said.
Addressing concerns about the late arrival, Christmas mentioned that the team was scheduled to reach Guatemala at 9 o’clock. “Yes, it’s a bit late, but under the circumstances, it’s the best that could have happened,” he acknowledged. Despite the delay and challenges faced, Christmas urged the public to remain calm and supportive. “We’re going to go out there, put our best foot forward, try to win the game, and then come back to Dominica.”
Earlier, several fans of the team expressed their frustration on social media regarding the alleged visa issues, which many blamed on the Dominica Football Association. Nonetheless, the team is focused on their match against Guatemala and looks forward to their subsequent game against Jamaica on June 9th at Windsor Park in Dominica.
The Dominica World Cup squad features six overseas-based players, adding depth and experience to the team as they compete on the international stage.
