Cultural Giants Unite to Celebrate 50 Years of Dominica’s Theatrical Milestone During Independence Season
Roseau, Dominica – May 13, 2025 — In what promises to be a landmark cultural celebration, Dominica will witness the restaging of one of its most iconic theatrical productions, STREAK!, this November 2025, in honor of the play’s 50th anniversary and what would have been the 77th birthday of its author and Dominican cultural icon, Dr. Alwin Bully.
The Golden Anniversary production is a collaborative effort between The Alwin Bully Foundation Inc., Kaz Kweyol Productions Ltd., and La Cour des Arts de la Dominique Inc., and forms a key highlight of Dominica’s 2025 Independence celebrations.
A Play That Transformed Caribbean Theatre
First written and performed in 1975 by the renowned People’s Action Theatre, STREAK! captured the cultural and political currents of a Caribbean in flux. The story, set against the backdrop of the Black Power and Rastafarian movements, tackled themes of identity, resistance, and youth rebellion—delivering a timely message that resonated across Dominica and the wider region.
The 2025 production will be directed by Mr. Severin McKenzie, who previously served as Assistant Art Director with the People’s Action Theatre. His return to the directorial chair brings a unique perspective steeped in the original spirit of the play, promising a bold, immersive experience that blends drama, music, and dance to reflect both the original narrative and contemporary relevance.
Soft Launch Scheduled for May 21st
To kick off the campaign, a soft launch of the STREAK! revival will take place on:

Dr. Alwin Bully—Dominica’s first Cultural Officer, acclaimed playwright, and designer of the national flag—remains a towering figure in the arts. His work helped shape not just national identity, but also influenced generations of Caribbean creatives. Through STREAK! and many other contributions, he helped theater become a tool for social commentary, cultural education, and artistic excellence.
The restaging of STREAK! is both a tribute to his vision and a call to re-energize Dominican theatre. The production team hopes to inspire renewed interest in performing arts among youth and the broader public, reigniting a national conversation on history, heritage, and social change.
